The Motion Lab is our internal development research centre. The R&D laboratory, located in our factory in Nîmes, exists with the aim of finding new solutions and materials, to draw, design and validate the technical and stylistic choices that are making - and will make - the top performing garments of today and tomorrow.
Equipped with state-of-the-art equipment, identical to that of the official certification laboratories, the Furygan Motion Lab also performs abrasion, cut, tear, perforation and ergonomic tests. We pride ourselves on developing products which are comfortable and protective, by having access to the testing rigs in-house, we can develop products efficiently and independently.
Furygan's Motion Lab is pivotal in allowing the brand to achieve – and often exceed - the new CE safety standards at a European level. These standards define the level of protection offered to users when a garment is marked as PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) for powered two wheelers users. Furygan is a front runner in this area as we’ve been undertaking development since 2009 and have integrated all the CE approval required tests in the design of our garments since 2011. As an early achievement we were, and remain, the first and only brand to have CE certification of our whole range by the independent laboratories.
Abrasion
Divided into zones, each of which is designed to attain resistance levels varying according to their importance in terms of protection, the clothing, boots and gloves are tested at numerous stages.
The machine replicates not only the conditions of a slide on highly abrasive asphalt but also simulates the impact and mechanical stress suffered by the materials as they make contact with the ground. Following multiple trials and through the use of ingenious material combinations, the Furygan Motion Lab is able to create products with resistance ratings which are sometimes 3 to 4 times higher than the benchmark thresholds.
Your jacket and gloves are your second skin. Every product in the Furygan range is guaranteed to exceed abrasion resistance standards.
Impact When you want the best performance available in the market, you should always go to the best. Thanks to an exclusive partnership, Furygan is the only French brand to equip its products with protective shells from D30, a specialist in impact protection and the inventor of a revolutionary material which hardens at the moment of impact. | Tearing Tears are the silent enemy of every biker. Faced with a low tear resistance, all of the key characteristics of a material can fail to provide protection when encountering abrasion. For this reason, the Furygan Motion Lab has always made a point of performing above the requirements of the standards, concerning both stitching and the materials used. | Cuts Cuts pose a problem similar to that of tears. Unless developed in compliance with bikers’ protective standards, even the finest materials can end up in shreds due to a simple cut following an impact. Furygan refuses to accept even one of its products being unable to offer total resistance following damage incurred during an impact. | Ergonomics Whether it’s comfort, preservation of your room for manoeuvre, access to pockets, a responsive “feel” for the controls of your bike or the certainty that nothing in one of our products can injure you, ergonomics has always been one of our key concerns. However, there is also a largely unknown aspect to ergonomics, contained in the standards and fully incorporated by Motion Lab: having the certainty that the movement of the protective pads will not prevent them from fulfilling their purpose. |
Leathers
The leather used by Furygan to manufacture our jackets, trousers and suits meet strict quality standards. Aside from the strength, they are all going through a number of extensive tests including Ph, dye steadiness to sweat, AZO, organotins, aromatic amines or screening.
Coming from South American cattle and tanned in Italy, every skin will be carefully scanned millimeter by millimeter by our highly-skilled leather experts in our Nîmes's factory.
Depending on the softness of the skin, the type of finish wanted or the kind of motorcycling activity the garment will be used for, its final thickness will vary from 1 to 1.3mm. The leather used to make the suits of our sponsored racers, is the same as the leather used for our off the peg products.
Textiles
- High tenacity bi-stretch : a stretch fabric with abrasion resistance capabalities that stretches vertically and horizontally. It provides elasticity and comfort in racing products without compromising protection.
- Ballistic : Polyamide fabric that is strengthen thanks to a particular type of weaving. The material has a coating on one side that holds the fibres together firmly, it is thicker, heavier and less flexible than usual 900 denier polyamide. It’s often used on the parts of the garment where impact abrasion resistancy is crucial – for example, elbows and knees.
- High tenacity Polyester : Thick Polyester fabric with a weight equal to or more than 900 denier – for example, a pair of women’s tights are around 10 denier in thickness. Held by multiple coatings this fabric offers a much better abrasion resistancy than standard polyester.
- Hitena : An abrasion resistant polyamide that has dirt resistancy abilities due to an external treatment.
- Kevlar® : Furygan uses a double face interlock (intermingled weaving) made with cotton and Kevlar from DuPont. It allows us to create a fabric that remains comfortable - thanks to the cotton - and which slows down heat transfer during abrasion. Another benefit is that it increases the overall abrasion resistancy of other materials it is used with.
Thread
The thread used by Furygan is also participating to our vision of quality. Made from High Tenacity Polyamide or Polyester, with a large thickness, the thread is an important factor in the strengh of a stitch. In the zones where the risk of abrasion is the most important the thread is protected by a fold of fabric. This is when it comes to the triple stitching, the most secured stitch possible.
Skin Protect© Linings A range of fixed linings approved by Furygan R&D (Motion Lab) designed to reinforce outer shell and sewings in terms of tearing and / or abrasion resistance. | Dual Lining© A mixed lining that equipes gloves for extreme conditions. Dual lining technology provides protection against the cold without sacrificing the feelings of the hands connecting with the handlebars. The linings in contact with the top of the hand is constructed from materials with a high level of insulation, while the construction of the liner on the palm provides a better compromise for sensitivity. | Aluminium Lining Thinness and performance. Based on the principle of a survival blanket, this technology guarantees the conservation of body heat by inserting a specific aluminium foil in front of the cotton padded lining. It allows vey thin but efficient liners, that allows leather jacket to be fitted perfectly whatever the season. | D3O D3O protection is flexible and ergonomic. D3O materials in their raw state flow freely when moved slowly, but on shock, lock together to absorb and disperse energy, before instantly return to their flexible state. Ideal for effective protection that remains easy to wear everyday. |
